I started my internship on 4th. I am picking up on things that school counselors do on a daily basis. I came across couple of students who do not see themselves in college. I had read about how kids drop-out from high-school, but this was the first time I ever heard a kid saying it. I never expected that I would be surprised by this as I have been reading about it.
Myself and the school counselor, tried our best to motivate these kids. But, I guess it's not gonna happen in a day. Motivating these kids has become my major goal now. I am planning to do some guidance lessons and run groups for these kids. I am looking out for more ideas to help these kids see a better future. Kindly share your thoughts.

Journey has just begun
I was video chatting with my father today morning and he suggested that I should write down my thoughts and experiences of working with children. And, I decided to give it a shot. I am a student pursuing my masters' in school counseling. I am almost at the end of this program and from next week onwards I start my internship at a middle school. Before starting this program, I had worked with school kids for couple of years as a student counselor. I thoroughly enjoyed working with those kids. But there were days when I could not help some of the kids due to my limited knowledge in the field. It was then I decided to seek further education in school counseling.
I had always heard and read that today's children are tommorow's future, but never had come to such a close realization. Children have so much potential in them that with a right direction can create wonders and make themselves and others proud of them. But, it is unfortunate to see how some children do not envision this due to lack of motivation/desire/encouragement. I was running a group on self-esteem few days back for 5th graders (as part of my coursework) and when the group ended one of my students' gave me a letter. She wrote to me that she is going to miss me because she considered me as the only one who cared for her. If a 5th grader can feel this, I wonder what the other kids go through in their lives. Being cared, loved, and trusted are also the basic needs for survival. Without these how will these kids become tommorow's future?
It is we, adults, who can make a difference in these kids' lives. And, I am creating this blog in the hope of not only sharing my experiences and ideas of working with children but also learning from other professionals, and parents experiences. Please, feel free to share your thoughts and experiences as well. We all can make a difference in the precious lives of children who are around us.
